Wetland Reclamation and the Development of Reclamation Landscapes: A Comparative Framework

Wetland reclamation has occurred under diverse geographic and socio-political conditions. A single event however, forms only one step in the evolution of what we refer to as landscapes. This paper assesses how interacting physical geographical, cultural biological processes shape landscape diachronically. Using a triangular model, compare two wetland landscapes: Pontine marshes central Italy, reclaimed part Rome’s early Imperial expansion; Onlanden area northern Netherlands, by emergent state societies Middle Ages. Reclamation turned out not fully resilient from perspective both cases, geographical continued raise challenges It is argued that model offers potential systematically explore drivers behind comparatively. better understanding such may turn improve current management policies, including rewilding efforts.
